IMG OB-GYN PERSONAL STATEMENT

By specializing in OB-GYN, I will be able to gain the expertise to be a first rate clinician.  I enjoy working in a variety of medical fields and my love for both surgery and hands on patient care will allow me to be actively involved in both these practice arenas.  While working in London I experienced an event that gave further definition to my future in medicine.  While walking towards the hospital, a patient thrust a baby in my arm and began taking pictures.  I quickly realized this baby was the first one I ever delivered.  Gazing at the miracle in my arms, I had absolute clarity that the place in medicine I belong is in the field of OB-GYN.

Training in a culturally diverse environment and studying in different countries has taught me to adapt to new situations, and has given me a scope for the diversity of medical conditions.  I found the curriculum at Outside the US University to be well rounded with total commitment to teaching the students.  The dedicated faculty as well as the state of the art technology was impressive.  Added to this, it gave me an opportunity to travel and experience island life.  After leaving the Caribbean behind, my quest for quality medical training, combined with my continued desire for travel and adventure, led to my first clinical year of training in England at the North Big Hospital.  Located in an area of North Large UK City, it primarily serves a lower income, immigrant population, and offers a diverse and well-rounded curriculum. Additionally, I received training with an emphasis on clinical impressions and history taking to formulate a diagnosis in a manner similar to US clinical training.  The wide spectrum of both medical and surgical encounters helped me to develop strong technical skills, diagnostic acumen, empathy, and most importantly, confidence.

During my rotations, I have gained an appreciation for the needs of medical care for women.  The fact that OB-GYN is a field that allows me to incorporate my love of surgery with the day-to-day care and education of patients is a great benefit.  I have a natural ability to comfort and reassure women who are in acute distress. It was during this time that I came to understand what a privilege it is to be a doctor of women’s health. Besides, the surgical experiences, I enjoyed the interaction with healthy women during pre-natal appointments, managing women with challenging medical conditions during pregnancy and taking care of the elderly through their period of change during menopause. Women play a pivotal role in our society. Taking care or their health will have a positive impact on their family as well as the community. The depth of knowledge in various diseases as well as the broad spectrum of skills needed in OB-GYN satisfies my intellectual curiosity.  All my experiences have reinforced my desire and determination to be an OB-GYN physician.  I have a love for medicine, the personality to be a leader, the desire and skills to be a surgeon, and the compassion to care for and understand a woman’s needs.

Selecting my specialty will set the framework for the next chapter of my life.  I have always envisioned that this journey through medical training would bring me to the front lines as a doctor fighting illness, battling social issues, and caring for those in need.  Through a specialty in OB-GYN, I will realize these goals and ambitions. As an OB-GYN physician, I will be able to integrate a love of teaching with my profession.  I will bring this enthusiasm and joy in teaching to my OB-GYN residency and future practice.

I have always strived to excel in anything I attempt.  Likewise, the residency program I seek must promote excellence through a faculty that demonstrates a commitment to teaching. I want to be part of an institution that promotes learning as well as compassion towards patients.  I want an environment where I will be able to work in research as I have in the past, and teach, while improving my clinical skills.  After several years of traveling and working abroad I am looking forward to again living in the United States and beginning a residency in OB-GYN. I know that my diverse training, my passion for OB-GYN and my desire to excel will make me an asset to any residency program.
