Sibelius - ' Violin Concerto / Nights in the Gardens of Spain [DVD] [1997] [NTSC] Editorial Review: Sibelius's solitary concerto is one of the most passionate tests for the violin virtuoso, one to which Maxim Vengerov is more than equal; he captures the work's passion and its occasional quirky patches of the spookily sublime. His performances of the "Sarabande" from the Bach Second Partita, and the "Ballade" from Ysaye's Third Sonata, are admirable encores demonstrating his range and his elegant control.
Barenboim's performance of the de Falla Nights is equally virtuoso, bringing out the work's structure as well as its local colour; Domingo's conducting is solid and serviceable. Barenboim ends the concert with three de Falla orchestral showstoppers--the "Farruca" from The Three-Cornered Hat and the "Magic Circle" and "Ritual Fire Dance" from Love the Magician; the Chicago Symphony perform throughout with their usual vigour and fine orchestral colour, but are particularly remarkable in these three encores.
On the DVD: The DVD comes with the usual subtitles in standard European languages. --Roz Kaveney
Customer Reviews: A definitive performance A nicely presented (and nicely cased) DVD, showing one of the worlds top orchestras with one of the worlds top pianists, playing a good work well. Add to this world-renown conductors and a couple of well-performed encores, and this would seem a DVD for classical musical lovers to savour. Wrong. This is a DVD for everyone who appreciates watching a true talent at the height of his powers - and it has nothing to do with any of the above. Not only is Maxim Vengerov's interpretation of Sibelius' Violin Concerto absorbing, his flawless technique and perfect execution is simply stunning. This if followed by a couple of encores, the Sarabande by Bach which he often plays, then an unaccompanied Ysaye sonata of which the performance is at times jaw-dropping. Mind-blowing. Many superlatives have been written about Vengerov and his performances, yet there needs to be more. This DVD is a brilliant demonstration of his brilliance. Buy it.
