Customer Reviews: Hana-kimi - awesome. To put it simply, Hana-kimi is awesome.
Hana-kimi is a shojo/shoujo manga, meaning it is a manga aimed at girls, and I'll warn you now, if you like mega action, constant blood and fighting, you won't like this, simple as that. However if you like relationships and light humour, you hould like this series!
It focuses on the main character Mizuki Ashiya, a girl from America who disguises herself as a boy to join an all boys school to meet the boy of her dreams, Izumi Sano.
The characters grow a lot as the series progresses and slowly become more deep.
I highly reccomend it to anyone to searching for a new manga, hopefuly you'll become hooked as quickly as I did!
It's fun! I haven't actually read the series, but I have watched the Japanese drama--it came out after the Taiwanese version, but is much, much better--(featuring Ikuta Toma as Nakatsu...now, he's hot), and it's well worth a try (I found myself in fits, sometimes)! I absolutely loved it, and I know the manga will be just as good!
You had me from 'hello'! From the very beginning I knew I was going to be hooked on this series. The characters are very well developed and the artwark gets progressively better (something that the author admits herself).
Naturally it won't suit everyone. Caution : Not for anyone who dislikes cross-dressing.
Addictive charcter interactions and addictive story.
Anyone into manga would love this!
Hooked Me in from the start A cute fun loving manga, it'll make you smile and make you laugh out loud..
Mizuki Ashiya a 15 year old girl in the states is completely taken by Izumi Sano, a popular high jumper in japan..
smittened with his good looks and inspired by him, she decides to do whatever it takes to meet him.. so she movs to japan to attened the same school as he does.. only thing is.. it's an all boys school!!
there she encounters some fascinating and interesting people.. gets herself into lots of pickles.. makes wonderful friends.. and rivals.
this book will make you want to turn the pages as quick as possible to find out what happens next, and at the same time want to read it slow enough to appreciate the wonderful artwork by the auther Hisaya Nakajo.
They Made a Taiwanese Drama out of this book.. not as good.. but it does have Wu Zun (yumm) and Jiro (yummy) from Farenheit and one of the members of S.H.E .. story was the same with a few funny additions here and there..
so far they have only printed up to vol 17 out of 24 in english.. they seem to come out every two months.. worth the wait every time.
i loved it.. hope you do too
Vol 1- great start I really enjoy Hana-Kimi, in more than one way. There's the loveable characters, the silliness, the cuteness, and the way the story manages to rise above the somewhat generic plotline of 'girl-dresses-as-boy-to-meet-boy-of-dreams'.
In the first volume, Ashiya enrolls in the all-boys' school her high-jump hero, Sano, goes to. While Sano figures out his new roommate's secret pretty quickly, he pretty much defies the generic reaction- instead of falling in love with her or confronting her with it, he just goes on treating her as if she's a guy, feeling too uncomfortable around her whenever he thinks of her as a girl.
Meanwhile, Nakatsu, one of Sano's friends and not the most perceptive person ever, finds himself growing attracted to Ashiya and freaks out, denying to himself constantly that he's gay as he glares at any and every other person who goes anywhere near Ashiya. His jealousy is really cute, and his reactions often make me laugh out loud.
You do get some of the typical storylines- the possessive ex; the over-enthusiasm to make everything perfect so everyone can be happy; the inevitable hints at future feelings that are, in the end, the reason we all keep reading series like this. But a pretty solid supporting cast, and a hero who manages to keep things on the ground without falling into the 'serious-without-a-cause' cliche, as well as the generous smatterings of humour, make this a really fun, enjoyable manga that never feels too ridiculous, or has situations that are too contrived.
The artwork is pretty and cute, if not quite to the standards of CLAMP or Angel Sanctuary, and the characters, to the manga-ka's credit, do grow as the series progresses. There's also the major bonus that this is really re-readable- I must've read the first volume at least five times by now.
If you like the cross-dressing, humourous, cute kind of manga- if you've read Girl Got Game and need something new or better in the same vein (which I think this definitely is), give Hana-Kimi a shot. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
