Hot Lights, Cold Steel: Life, Death and Sleepless Nights in a Surgeon's First Years by Dr. Michael J. Collins Great Doctor, Great Author Love the author and the unassuming manner in which he approaches the subject of becoming a doctor. Only complaint, he should have written his latest book "Blue Collar, Blue Scrubs", which came out in 2009, first. The House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American Hospital by Samuel Shem Interesting and troubling I work as a database guy at a med school. One of the doctors recommended this to give me "further background". Apparently it's recommended reading for all aspiring MD's. Another of the docs I work with came from the environment mentioned in the book - with some obfuscation.
