The House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American Hospital by Samuel Shem Interesting and troubling I work as a database guy at a med school. One of the doctors recommended this to give me "further background". Apparently it's recommended reading for all aspiring MD's. Another of the docs I work with came from the environment mentioned in the book - with some obfuscation.
Fourteen Stories: Doctors, Patients, and Other Strangers (Literature and Medicine) by Jay Baruch So-So I'm not in any hurry to finish reading this book. I didn't realize these were fictional short stories and honestly, I'm not all that fond of his writing. The medicine in the fiction is top-notch, but the stories are so-so.read more...
