The House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American Hospital by Samuel Shem Interesting and troubling I work as a database guy at a med school. One of the doctors recommended this to give me "further background". Apparently it's recommended reading for all aspiring MD's. Another of the docs I work with came from the environment mentioned in the book - with some obfuscation.
Iserson's Getting Into a Residency: A Guide for Medical Students, 7th Edition by Kenneth V. Iserson Good information, but I couldn't stand reading it. There is a lot of good numerical information and details about where to find more information, but the book sounds like it was written by the Queen Bee of the gunner hive. Here is a quote:
