Customer Reviews: Should be a must read for all medical students I used to work at UMC in Tucson with Dr. Hamilton over 10yrs ago and have sinced moved on to another hospital in town. I had no idea he had written a book until a past co worker told me about it. I read it over a two day period and had a hard time putting it down. Each chapter was better than the last. Not only is he a gifted surgeon but a wonderful story teller. I have been a nurse for 25yrs and met many surgeons with large egos. Dr. Hamilton does not fall into this category. He wasn't afraid to mention his failings in this book and did a great job of emphasizing how important our spirituality is and our connection with the universe and God. One of the best books I have ever read!
Book: The Scalpel and the Soul Very good, thought-provoking book. Well written, and eagerly awaited by my friends with whom I share my books. They are enjoying it, too. Used book in new condition from Goodwill Industries of San Fransisco. I'm glad I got it.
book review Great book, ordered a second copy for a friend-also a nurse, and sharing my copy with my fellow nurses at the hospital where I work who are all finding it a great book also and there are several who are in line to read it!!
Great Book I heard about this book when Dr. Hamilton was interviewed on a radio talk show. Is one of those radio shows that are on for people that can't sleep-3:00 o'clock in the morning. Dr. Hamilton told the story of a very young burned victim(amazing story, I won't spoiled it for you). And , I was so touched by the story that I make it my mission to find out who were persons talking on the radio for I neither knew the interviewer or the doctor.
I emailed KFI, 640 AM the Los Angeles local talk radio station, long story short, i found out it was Dr. Hamilton and I ordered the book through Amazon.
I was impressed with the author ( he is a consultant for Grey Anatomy TV show), Harvard educated Doctor, etc, etc. But the stories are wonderful and sad. It validates beliefs, my beliefs, that there is so much more then meets the eye and what is in front of you.
Most of the stories are of someone unfortunate to get a tumor or brain cancer, and Dr. Hamilton describes and see their spirits, their will to live or not live. I won't go into specific details of each story but suffice that HOPE and positive attitude are not just platitudes and cliches but real survival reality, a must, a requirement, if a person is to fight the disease.
I have to say this is one of my favorite books I've read recently. I talked to many of my friends and I have a waiting list of people wanting to read it. And last, Dr. Hamilton gives 21 recommendations for people going through sickness, staying in hospital and techniques on how to deal with it. That alone is price of admission.
Loved the book!
Moving Personal-Diary-Insight, no need of editing Compared to some biographical material this is beautifully concise, I think the notion of being paid by-the-word could never have entered the author's distinguished mind. Such variety of deep insights chosen from his entire life, which you get for not-very-much reading time puts this into my short list of bang-per-page books, never mind bang-per-buck, your time is important too.
